Apple Yang, Artistic Director of Appetite Dance Productions, creates worlds shaped through her inner experiences as a Chinese woman living in contemporary Britain. Here she explores her relationship with her father, its challenges, its joy and the hidden woman she has become. Told through expressive and beautiful dance we discover what it means to be a Chinese woman shackled by the weight of expectation.
“You were my warrior, my protector, my first love and I was your precious, virtuous princess. You set me on a pedestal – so high – so high! I was bound to fall! Did you catch me when I fell? No! You threw me to the ground! You wanted me to be a good girl but I became a woman. - But then … then when love came I wasn’t ready. I held back!
If only I knew then what I know now … But I escaped. I escaped you. I escaped up the aisle of a church... These are things I could never tell you because you think you know me, but you only know the unblemished statue of me that you have carved in your heart.”
This performance is accompanied by live music.
