Grainger Market celebrates its 175th Birthday in October - Time Warp at the city market from 25 to 30 October 2010
Expect some visitors from the past at the Grainger Market as it reaches its 175th birthday. During October half term holiday, you may find yourself shopping along side some Victorian ladies or walking on Nelson Street with an old fashioned bicycle running past.
Monday - Victorian day
Get a feel for the world of victorian Newcastle with tours, clothes, money, weights and toys. Make a shopping list for your victorian shopping basket.
Tuesday - Victorian children's day
Give your children a feeling of life without the Wii, when the Beamish Youth Club show them how to play with a whip and top, cup and ball, skipping ropes and Jacob's ladder. You'll also be able to have a go at making a peg doll and thaumatrope.
Wednesday - Gourmet day
With demonstrations from traders and City Cuisine, this is a day for foodies, you'll be able to pick up tips, recipes and sample the ingredients in the market.
Thursday - getting crafty
There'll be craft demonstrations throughout the day of painting woodturning, jewellery making and glass painting. There'll also be a chance for you to try some traditional crafts such as lace making, proggy mats, knitting, quilting and crocheting.
Friday - Children's fund day
Something to entertain the children, with activities table, magician and a facepainter.
Saturday - arts and craft
It's Halloween and our usual arts and crafts fair seems to be haunted by the ghosts of craft fairs past. Come along between 9am and 5pm to see the Victorian traders sell their wares.
Grainger Market - recipe competition
Do you have a family recipe that you think should be shared with your fellow Geordies? We're looking for recipes for a recipe book to celebrate the best of North East Cooking.
If yours is the overall winner, you'll find yourself taking part in a VIP dinner at the Civic Centre with your recipe being cooked by Head Chef, Julian Holland. Why not email your entries to jane.rose@newcastle.gov.uk?
Touch the past at the Library
Visit the City Library in October to see our touching the past exhibit. You'll be able to get your hands on the sort of things sold at the market in 1835 when the market opened. You'll see photos, adverts and newspaper articles from the markets' history both in the library and in the market.
If you have any old photos of the Grainger Market, we'd love to see them. Leave them at the market inspectors office on alley 2 or email jane.rose@newcastle.gov.uk. If you leave them in the office, please make sure they are marked with your name on the back and you give us your full address.
