Rockets, smoke rings and rainbows – just some of the science demos thrilling audiences in a live show at the Life Science Centre.

Entitled ‘Top 10’, the 20-minute science show celebrates the Centre’s tenth birthday by taking a look at some of the most popular science demonstrations that have featured in Life’s theatre shows over the last decade.

Elin Roberts, Head of Public Engagement, said: “We’ve had some thrilling science shows here over the years covering subjects as diverse as dinosaurs, astronauts, ice and even snot. We regularly have visitors asking to see a favourite demo they saw during a previous visit so we thought we’d take the best of all our shows and combine them into a Top 10 show to celebrate our tenth birthday.”

The ’Top 10’ show features a science demonstrator who performs the demos voted for by the audience.

Toni Hamill, Public Engagement Officer at Life, explains what happens during the show: “We have ten of our favourite science demos ready to perform for the audience. We give a brief teaser of each and ask the audience to vote for which ones they’d like to see. It’s good fun and gets some friendly competition going in the audience and it also means that no two shows are the same as different audiences go for different demos.”

She continues, “One of the most popular demos uses metal salts to create different colour flames while another creates stunning smoke rings that float above the audience. It’s great to see and hear the reactions we get from visitors, they are genuinely excited by what science can achieve.”

Four-year-old Ben Martin, from Hebburn, who was on a visit to the Centre with his family, said: “I loved the experiments; they were really good fun to watch and very exciting.”

The ’Top 10’ show runs at regular intervals across the day and will be available until 31 October.

Other attractions at the Life Science Centre currently include the BBC Doctor Who exhibition which features props and characters from the hit TV series.
