CITY CENTRE RETAILERS VOTE TO STAY OPEN UNTIL 8PM YEAR ROUND
A major permanent transformation of Newcastle is happening from 25th October 2010 as the city will stay open and be “Alive after Five”.
Eldon Square has decided it is to stay open until 8pm every weekday and until 7pm on Saturdays from the 25th October and retailers across the city centre are getting on board with Newcastle's new core trading hours.
The decision by Eldon Square signals the first step in the wider project to keep the whole city “Alive after Five” and we are working closely with retailers across the rest of the city, leisure operators and cultural and event venues to ensure their involvement.
The new permanent late night opening will launch officially at the beginning of the school half term holiday, traditionally the start of the busiest two months of Newcastle’s calendar in the lead up to Christmas.
From 25th October 2010 Newcastle city centre will be “Alive after Five”, with:
• Shops across the city centre staying open until 8pm Monday to Friday and 7pm on Saturdays
• Free parking proposed in all City Council multi-storey car parks after 5pm
• Bars, restaurants and cultural venues offering additional promotions and offers
• Fully coordinated Police and Street Ranger presence
• World-class street performances every night Monday to Friday across the city between 5pm and 8pm
