The Castle Keep is one of the finest Norman stone castle keeps or great towers surviving in Britain today. It was the defensive strongpoint of the castle of Newcastle and was built between 1168-78. It sits upon a steep-sided promontory guarding a vital crossing point on the river Tyne on ground previously occupied by a Roman fort called Pons Aelius, an Anglo-Saxon cemetery (possibly serving a nearby settlement called Monkchester) and a Norman timber castle. This was the ‘New Castle’ from which the modern City takes its name. The Castle Keep is home to the Buildings of Newcastle exhibit and a collection of artefacts from prehistoric to Victorian times. It also boasts an outstanding view of the river and seven bridges from its rooftop.

The Black Gate was the last addition to the castle defences. It was built between 1247-50 in the reign of Henry III. It formed a projecting gateway or barbican, attached to the earlier, 12th century, North Gate of the castle. The barbican consisted of a gatehouse flanked by two half-drum towers with a narrow, high-walled, passage to the rear. . The present upper floors, red pantiled roof, and pointed false arch between the drum towers, were added in the early 17th century.

Opening Hours for Castle Keep:
Monday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm and from Noon to 5pm on Sundays. Last admissions at 4:15pm.

Prices for Castle Keep:
Admission for adults is £4.00, senior citizens £3.50 and students £3.50. Under 18s are free (when accompanied by a responsible adult). Payment by cash only.

Facilities:
The Castle Keep does not conform to the standards expected of a modern building. It does not have toilet facilities, running water, eating facilities or integral heating. Additionally, access is challenging due to the number and steepness of its stairs. Access for those with mobility difficulties (including wheelchairs) can be facilitated to the ground floor Garrison Room but not beyond. The Garrison Room has a virtual tour of the building. These tours are by appointment only and are free of charge. Please telephone in advance to avoid disappointment and we will ensure that you are greeted appropriately. The tour is also available on our website at www.castlekeepnewcastle.org.uk. The ticket office has an induction loop system to assist hearing-impaired visitors. Visitor guides in Braille and large print are available and should be requested in advance. The nearest toilets are at St. Nicholas Cathedral, Central Station, Bigg Market, Dean Street multi-storey car park or adjacent to the Swing Bridge (awkward to access).

Travel:
The Castle Keep is situated in the centre of Newcastle adjacent to the High Level Bridge. Limited Blue Badge holder parking is available next to the entrance. Castle Keep is close to public transport routes. Newcastle Central Station (mainline and Metro) is approximately 400 metres away. From the main entrance of the station turn right along Neville street and keep right on Westgate Road to the junction with St. Nicholas Street. Castle Keep is across the road on your right.
